🔔 Smart 3-Layer Reminders
Reminders Should Help, Not Punish
Open most planning apps and you’ll see a wall of red. Overdue badges. Warning icons. That little number on the app icon silently judging you for not completing yesterday’s tasks.
These apps treat you like you need discipline. Composed treats you like you need awareness.
Our reminder system is built on a simple insight: the kind of nudge you need changes depending on how far away something is. A birthday next month needs a different kind of reminder than a meeting in two hours.

The Three Layers
Layer 1: Awareness (More Than 7 Days Away)
When something is far out, you don’t need urgency. You need to know it’s coming so you can start thinking about it naturally.
Awareness reminders are calm and informational. “Mom’s birthday is in 12 days.” No action required. No checklist. Just a gentle note that surfaces at the right moment so it stays on your radar.
Layer 2: Action (Within 7 Days)
Now it’s time to start doing things. Action reminders connect to your prep tasks and give you clear, specific nudges.
“Dinner party in 4 days — time to pick up ingredients.” These aren’t vague “don’t forget!” alerts. They’re tied to actual tasks with actual deadlines, and they arrive when you still have comfortable time to act.
Layer 3: Urgency (Within 24 Hours)
The event is imminent. Now reminders shift to logistics. What time to leave. What to bring. Final confirmations.
But even here — no guilt. If you haven’t done a prep task, Composed doesn’t scold you with red badges and exclamation points. It just tells you what’s left and when the event starts. You’re an adult. You’ll figure it out.
What Makes This Different
No Overdue Shame
Most apps turn incomplete tasks into permanent guilt. That red badge counter keeps climbing. The “overdue” label stays there, mocking you every time you open the app.
Composed doesn’t do this. If a deadline passes, the item simply moves into a “still open” state. No angry colors. No shame language. Things happen when they happen.
Timing That Adapts
A weekly grocery run and an annual birthday need completely different reminder patterns. Composed understands this. Recurring items get appropriate spacing. One-time events get escalating awareness. Yearly occasions like birthdays and anniversaries get a special cascade starting three weeks out.
Calm Notifications
Even the notification text is designed to be calm. You’ll never see “URGENT” or “OVERDUE” or “You forgot to…” in a Composed notification. Instead: “Dinner with Alex is tomorrow evening.” Simple, factual, helpful.

Real Scenarios
The Relaxed Holiday Season
You add gift-buying tasks for December. Three weeks out, you get gentle awareness: “Holiday shopping — 15 items to consider.” Two weeks out, action nudges start: “Order Sarah’s book before shipping cutoff.” Day-of, you get a simple “Wrapping party tonight at 7.” No stress spiral. Just graduated awareness.
The Appointment You Don’t Miss
Dentist appointment Thursday at 2pm. A week before: “Dentist next Thursday.” Day before: “Dentist tomorrow at 2pm.” Two hours before: “Leave for dentist in 30 minutes.” Each reminder is proportional to what you need to do about it.
The Project Deadline
Report due in 10 days. Awareness layer keeps it visible. Action layer nudges you through milestones. Urgency layer handles the final push. At no point does the app scream at you — it just keeps you informed.

Works With Everything Else
The reminder system is woven into every part of Composed:
- AI Prep Tasks — each prep task gets appropriately timed reminders
- Departure Tracking — urgency-layer reminders include “time to leave” calculations
- Flight Intelligence — flight reminders include gate changes and boarding times
- Voice Input — say “remind me the day before” and the right layer activates
Planning shouldn’t feel like a performance review. Composed reminds you of what matters, when it matters, without making you feel bad about the rest.
